Why are "Deja Vu" + other albums ignored?

Thu, Oct 4, 2012 at 7:37 PM

Just got done listening to the Deja Vu album. So many great tunes on there- She's Got Baggage, Wicked Old Witch, the title track- that never get played. Aside from "I Will Walk With You," I don't recall him playing anything from that album in his concerts in the past couple years. And the record isn't even 10 years old!! At the time it was his highest charting album since Centerfield. And unfortunately, it looks like Revival has fallen into the same hole- it's only been out for 5 years, and now he's only playing two songs (Don't You Wish and Gunslinger) from the CD in his shows. No Natural Thing, no Can't Take it No More, no LONGSHOT (that one smokes).

Same goes for Pendulum... he only plays two songs off this classic album (which, with the incredible Bob Malone on organ, begs to be played). And the 1975 John Fogerty album- only plays Rockin All Over the World in his concerts. Never plays anything off Zombie or the Blue Ridge Rangers. Major bummer. Some of these albums were BUILT for the stage yet other records like Centerfield, Blue Moon Swamp, and all the CCR albums (beside Pendulum) dominate the setlist.

Thoughts?

I think John Fogerty has so many great songs that it is impossible to play them all.
He changed a lot of tunes during the live concerts in the past years, so the fans can be happy I think.
It will be difficult to play EVERY song I guess and every fan also has a different opinion of what's good or bad, or wants to hear a different song.
Besides that you have to keep in mind that 80 percent of the songs played on a night should be well known CCR or John Fogerty hit songs or a big part of the crowd will not recognise the songs and then during these songs they will go for a beer or to the bathroom :)
We fans are a special kind of humans, of course we prefer John to do the obscure ones.
I agree with you about "Deja Vu" and "Revival" , but in real life it will be hard to please everyone I guess.

It's uncanny - we're riding on the same wavelength today because I was just thinking of the same thing today, as I took a road trip to Redondo Beach! I had the two long songs playin', over and over from "Cosmo's Factory", and just LOVIN the HELL outta 'RAMBLE TAMBLE" and "GRAPEVINE!"
    HONEY, HONEY, * Y * E * A * H * !!!

Anyhow - - - John has such an incredible body of work that we sometimes just return to the comfortable, more popular CDs, although I am also on a REVIVAL kick right now.

You're absolutely right that LONGSHOT from Revival totally SMOKES!!! I LOVE THAT SONG!!!!
Also you can't forget SUMMER OF LOVE, Creedence Song, Broke Cowboy, Gunsling, the 90-second song, and I Can't Take it No More and geez!!! So many good songs as of late!!!!

I will have to correct the situation and get Deja Vu out and take another good listen to it.
Any time I listen to Fogerty, it's always really great!!!!! Thanks GD!!!!

John has played many songs during the years... sometimes songs have stayed longer, sometimes they have been dropped after a while. Like Robert says, it's difficult to put *all* the songs we want to hear in the show, because indeed, the casual fans (95% of the people who go to concerts) mostly want to hear the famous stuff.

About Deja Vu (the song), he played it live for quite a while after the album came out, but I guess by now it has become a bit outdated, as its subject (the Iraq war) is mostly over... same with the anti-Bush songs on Revival (which were GREAT live). From BRR he has played a number of songs through the year, including Working On A Building, Jambalaya and Hearts Of Stone. He played Change In The Weather a few times after he re-recorded it for BRRRA, but we know John has a certain dislike for the Zombie album, as it was recorded during a very bad period in his life, so I guess he just doesn't want to be reminded about it. The same can probably be said about Pendulum, as it was recorded in the period when Creedence was starting to break up...

But it's true what you say, there are so many (almost) never played gems in those albums... it would be nice to hear them live.

    Steve,

yeah, Pendulum is a great album! I've heard many fans say that they wished John played Pagan Baby live, it's a real fan favorite! Born To Move is another one I would love to hear live... and Molina, of course.

    I agree with Micio.

Deja VU collects dust except for "I Will Walk with You" and, surprisingly, "Sugar Sugar (In My Life), which is quickly moving up my "Fav John Fogerty vocals list."

Revival knocked me flat on my rear the first couple of times. Then, as Micio correctly notes, the tunes quickly became dated. I think Fogerty was trying to recapture his "Fortunate Son" magic and missed by quite a distance. Now, it's just "Creedence Song" and "Broke Down Cowboy," which I love so much I ripped it off as my email account name.
