Edmonton - The Ultimate John Fogerty Concert?
Hi folks:
Allen and i just got back to the hotel from the show tonight. W O W!!! Double W O W!!! Triple W O W!!!! There is no beginning and no ending for what to say. Waaaaay too much.....
After arriving in Edmonton earlier today, Allen and I headed over to the venue for sound check. Since it took some time a little longer for the equipment trucks to get to Edmonton, sound check started about 5:30 or so instead of about 4:30. Worth the wait - you better believe it.
There was about 19 people including Allen and I at the sound check. A young guy named Steve took care of us. Very personable and cute too. I'll write about sound check later, have to get to the show itself. I've read about the new production and heard about it. To experience it is an entirely different ballgame. The logistics and expense put into the production part is awesome. Before the concert starts, there is a video screen that shows pictures of John through his younger years moving along to his CCR days and beyond. There are various facts about John displayed which all are very interesting. Even some of the stuff we know, it was nice to have it displayed along the way in chronological order. I probably read it somewhere at some point, but did not remember that John wrote his first song at 8 years old. Stuff like this that is just so interesting...anyway, this video lasts about 10-15 minutes or so. After that, at about 8:15, John's band started to take the stage and then shortly thereafter John. Realizing some of this has already been posted, I still feel the need to also put the words down. John starts by taking the pose that is on the inside cover of Pendulum, with his arm extended. There is a sort of digital displaythat is behind him and this display during the shows has multi colored lights, diagrams, etc, that compliment each song. There are multiple video screens one each hanging stage left and stage right and one center stage. Various videos are shown during some of the songs, if not then a video camera shows John on this screen while he is performing. There are fog machines which add a really neat touch to some of the songs, there are blasts of strategically placed flames shooting into the air (yes you can feel the heat) during other songs...there is such a feeling of energy that the whole show gives, you'd think a city could be powered by it.
John's voice shows absolutely no sign of getting weaker - in fact, I could not believe how strong his vocals were tonight. Energy level was through the roof. He talked quite a bit with the crowd before certain songs - a nice story about Woodstock and the Grateful Dead.
Before going on about the production and John and everything else, I better post the set list cause these hotel computers have a way of making things disappear into the "black hole" - at least for me... So the set list first:

RE: Edmonton - The Ultimate John Fogerty Concert?
Hey Walter,
Think I confused you with the Born on the Bayou name. It's Darlene not Raylene here. I changed my name with the new site here. Anyway, you would not believe the show nowadays. For everyone out there, to be honest it takes looking at this new production show more than once to actually absorb all what has been put into it. I forgot to post last night that when John takes the stage at the start with the "Pendulum" pose, he is elevated on the stage and has to walk down about three steps and then another couple or so before he gets to the mic in the center of the stage. Kenny's drum set is off to the right (as u r facing the stage) to accomodate this new setting.
Also, at the end of the show I failed to mention that red, white and blue confetti falls from the ceiling area of the venue. Visually it is quite nice and the crowd loved it. I certainly did. This whole show was remarkable, John himself was full of energy with his guitar playing on fire. He interacted with Kenny and James a lot and there were some extended guitar playing on several songs including Hot Rod Heart. Even Dave got to do a neat bass lead during this song which was cool.
I was not at the Regina show so cannot speak as to what kind of show it was. I can tell you that John mentioned this show at least a couple of times - once during his talking at sound check - and was extremely impressed and obviously had a great time doing the show. Way to go, Regina!!!!!!! John also said that this cross country Canadian tour has been a really good time for him.
You know, at the end of show and later on, the thought crossed my mind that a show like last night I would think would be how John would want to be his last live performance. It was that top notch. Thankfully it is not. I would encourage anyone who has not seen John on this Canadian tour if it is at all possible to make a show, do yourself a huge favor and do it. You don't know what you're missing. The man is not missing a beat as time goes on - John is hot and do what you can to check this new show out. I don't know if the upcoming shows in Arizona will be featuring all the new stuff. I sure hope so. But with all the equipment and manhours it must take to set this up not counting the additional costs, I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Certainly more later.

Re: Edmonton - The Ultimate John Fogerty Concert?
Thanks for the report. I was wondering... what did John + band play at the soundcheck? Were they working up any new songs, or digging out any rarities from the chest, or just playing the same-old songs from the setlist?
A few years ago (in Europe I think) he soundchecked a bunch of Centerfield songs that hadn't been played in years.... and a few months later they were in the setlist. Hopefully his soundchecks are similar nowadays where he works up songs to play at a later date. -

Hi Darlene, sure wish we could have been there with you
and Allen. It sounds like a blast with all the extras
going on.
John just keeps giving and giving and gets better with every show.
After hearing all the great comments about the additions on stage
I'm hoping I'll get to see it some day.

Re: Edmonton - The Ultimate John Fogerty Concert?
Glad to hear John had a good time in Regina! We were singing along to tons of his songs... Yu can see that he was genuinely proud of his fans, his smile couldn't be hidden behind a microphone, oh no! He is a great inspiration to us songwriters and lifers on this worldwide chain gang. Just wish I could have shook the mans hand! Maybe next time.... Oh yes, next time.... I can't wait till he comes up around the bend again. ;)

Re: Edmonton - The Ultimate John Fogerty Concert?
Hi Darlene, Thank you for all the great detail that you lovingly placed when writing up your review. The show sounds really different and full of exciting new things to see and hear. Of course we all wonder how John is doing healthwise and vocals-wise, so thank you for including a few words about DA MAN himself!!! It's great to know he's healthy, strong and happy. He just defies time and gravity, doesn't he?
Anyhow -- - - if you remember more details about your experience at Edmonton, please circle back here and drop us another line or two, ok? I sure do appreciate you being there to support John and his BAND and his family and entire road crew!!!!
This Canadian tour is a record-breaker in many respects!!! Congratulations to John and everyone for working so incredibly hard to bring about the best rock concerts ever!!!!
