Creedence Song (From Revival album)

Thu, Oct 4, 2012 at 5:34 PM

Did a quick search after registering and was surprised nothing came up. This song is a GEM!!

First time I listened to it.. I heard Suzie Q.. Born on the Bayou,.. Lookin Out My Back Door.. Green River... and a bunch others.. but not quite, you know? This song sounds like John took 'whispers' of great Fogerty writings of the past and weaved a tapestry that spoke of the years when every Tom Dick and Harry band could play CCR songs in backwoods bars, play them poorly, and not pay royalties to Saul Zaentz.

To me it's a sarcastic jab at these wannabe bands, (several of which, I confess, I've played in) who attempt to purvey the same energy and aptitude that John naturally exudes, and came significantly short.

What's your take on this song? Do you hear what I hear? Does it sound to you like a visceral response to the frustration it must have been to know that all these part time wannabes could play CCR songs without being sued, but he couldn't?

I've probably performed (on guitar) most every big CCR song that came out over the short time they were releasing albums. Even a couple from Centerfield. But I would never attempt to sing them. I just never felt myself a worthy enough vocalist to do so, because I don't want to play a song if what I play isn't respectful of the genius who first penned the music.

I see you're asking what's my take on Creedence Song? Is this the 64,000 dollar question?
I see it as a very uplifting song / Fogerty being very proud of his songs from his Creedence era, and how people from all over the world have grown to love and embrace those wonderful songs and we keep them close to us - and make those songs a daily presence in our lives.

I love the chorus, "Doo, doo!!!" It's a really nice repeating chorus and it talks to me - like reminicing to, "Looking out my back door" or "Green River." Two of Fogerty's tip-top songs ever written.

I don't think it's a song of frustration at all / I only feel the love from it.

He's a happy man these days! And he oughta be! All that hard work, all those late nights and working and writing those songs from scratch and the perspiration of putting it all out on the line, back in the day.
It worked very well for da man!!!

Now he's riding the crest of that Creedence wave, like a big wave surfer!!!
Fogerty's riding the gigantic wave of his immense success like nobody's business, and you know - it's got to feel really GOOD!!!!! COWABUNGA, DUDES!!!!!

It's interesting how our tastes in music vary so much among the fans. "Creedence Song" is probably my least favorite on the Revival CD. Don't know why, it just never clicked with me. I like the lyrics because it really shows that John has reconnected with his CCR legacy, and the guitar licks are vintage Creedence. But when it's all said and done, it just doesn't work for me. Now, Gunslinger/Broken Down Cowboy/River is Waiting are absolute killers for me. I could listen to those over and over and over.....by the way, I would love to hear John cover Thin Lizzy's "Cowboy Song".
"If it's too loud, you're too old."

My fav song from Revival is "Long Dark Night!" I also adore "LONGSHOT" and "Broken Down Cowboy" and "Gunslinger" and "Creedence Song" and the song that's 90 seconds long!!! The whole thing is wonderful.

I still think Creedence Song is like a collage, it still reminds me of a list of his past hits.. just hinting at them.

Funny, "Cowboy" is probably my least fave on the album, not to say I don't like it, just that if I relisted the tracks in order of preference, it'd be at the bottom.

Near the top would be the song in this thread topic, then "River", then Gunslinger. The rest are all pretty equal in my mind.

Well, if I was in a choir I'd be in the Bass2 section, those who can hit the absolute lowest notes in the group and still keep their tone.

But my upper range is in the lower tenor, and most of the songs that I'd love to sing are way way too high for me. Lookin Out My Back Door, after the modulation becomes impossible for me without going into falsetto and you simply don't do CCR in falsetto. To me, it's disrespectful.

OK just joined this site. I am from Australia, not that that is of any importance. :-)

However, I do have a question.

How on earth does one play the run down at the end of each verse?

I have seen D5 D5 C5 and A/D7 G/D7 C/Cadd2 none of which seem to make sense sound-wise. Probably the way I am trying to play it.

Any assistance / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
