Hoodoo the lost album

Sun, Jul 1, 2012 at 8:44 PM

Have you heard it and what do you think of it. If this is new to you I have a link on my profile page here on Fogerty.com that talks about it. Some time in the near future I will try to upload the album for all to hear. Personally the original is a bit rough but I really wish John would completely re-due the album from scratch. There are some good songs there and deserve another chance.

Hi Mike, This is a topic that rises up to the surface of the Fogerty Bayou on a regular basis. For the most part, most fans LOVE the Hoodoo album, and there are many "stories" as to how it was smuggled out of Asylum Records by a true/blue fan. The boss gave orders that all copies of the original Hoodoo vinyls be destroyed, but this fan secretly smuggled a couple vinyls out the back door and now alot of John's fans own bootlegged copies of a very muddled and murky HOODOO.
There are many legendary tales surrounding HOODOO and we may never know what actually happened but I for one LOVE the album and my favorite track is "Between the Lines" which sort of explains that an album of this caliber should NEVER be discarded like yesterdays newspaper! If you read between the lines of all the stories surrounding HOODOO, it is an album that has it's own space and was never "lost."
It may have been misplaced, but HOODOO is a highly valued alblum amongst all CCR/Fogerty fans worldwide.
PEACE / LOVE & CREEDENCE: OUT!

Personally I have always loved this album. In my book, this record is up there with my favourite Fogerty releases (Blue Moon Swamp & Revival). Songs like ON THE RUN and BETWEEN THE LINES are so beautiful. YOU GOT THE MAGIC and YOU EVIL THING are just fantastic rockers.

We'll probably never know, but I too would like to know how Hoodoo got out of the factory back then.

    hi all
The debate on this album will never go away.... its like the creedence reunion topic..... in my eyes perhaps it should be left in `76, john was quoted as saying he might revisit some of those songs one day. john fogerty is i think well aware of the interest in this sudio set. He did say he asked asylum records to destroy the masters sometime in the early eighties. What he hasn`t said is he will never look at this body of work at all......it would be nice if he made a definitive statement on these songs.

I think HooDoo is a classic. I wonder if the best bootleg copy can be taken and re-mastered with todays technology and release as recorded and not re-recorded.

    Mark and Everyone,
You know, when thinking back on all those old stories associated with HOODOO, I recall hearing that an old cleaning woman snuck a master vinyl from out of the trash bin and hid it in her big black coat and took it home with her one night. She knew the music that was contained within, and could not bare to let it go to waste. It may have gone to waste anyhow - she hid it someplace so good, that she forgot where she put it.
Another story that a fan once told me way back in 1997 about Hoodoo is that the sound engineer knew that master vinyls were being dumped so he grabbed a couple of the master and hid them in his bag and took them home with him. He later sold them to a rich fan who lived someplace in Europe.
It is unknown HOW MANY master vinyls Asylum Records pressed. Some say that the record execs who ordered HOODOO to be hogtied also had their regrets and one exec was rumored to have taken a vinyl copy in the proper album cover home with him, "Just in case." Nobody knows if this person still retains the master.
Some say that John's brother was so aghast at Asylum's decision to not release HOODOO that he took a copy home and has it stashed in a forgotten suitcase in the shelf of a forgotten closet in a storage shed someplace.
The stories go on and on, but I tend to believe them all!
Nobody knows how many masters were pressed, but there could have been 10, 100 or maybe 200 of them! Some made it into the trash bin, but there are many that are out there, circulating or just gathering dust in dark, secret drawers, closets and shelves that remain forgotten.
Someday one of them will resurface and I just hope that they don't get tossed carelessly away!!!!

Hoodoo represents a very painful period in John's life. The music is definitely not up to the stratospheric levels of some of his other releases. One or two decent songs but a lot of "blarney" as well. He made the right decision.

All this talk about "BootLeg" wondering if this is what inspired that record? If not maybe another story is there somewhere. Love the line, " Now take you a glass of water, Now make it against the law, See how good the water taste when you can't have any at all." I would like the hear more stories behind how he wrote the records. He does an awesome job in that he shares where he was and what state of mind he was in. Would be nice to start a section of John Fogerty ; "The stories behind the music." Even an awesome audio interview with some one from the site here. What do ya'll think ?

I would love to hear more story's behind his music. I do remember The Blue ridge Ranger Rides Again and Revival DVD's have interviews that are pretty In-depth. I take what I can when it comes to John because he seems to be very private as he should I guess.

ALL copys of that bootleg around come from only one casette that was spread and copied etc.
So even the best sounding version of that album comes actually from the very poor sounding casette, so you won't get it in better quality like this i guess:

I just LOVE how the legend of HOODOO continues to grow and swirl around and round, and the old tales that surround the album keep growing and branching out, like an ivy plant growing - with plenty of water going into it and a rich, coffee-ground soil. HOODOO came from a very organic place in John Fogerty's fertile song harvesting mind; he's like a farmer going out to the fields, even at nightfall, when darkness is falling all around. He never came back empty-handed from his songwriting fields; he always brought something good inside with him.

John Fogerty once said that he takes perfect care of everything that he owns or keeps.
So - Nurses like me don't have to have everything spelled out for our understanding - we get it right away!

There are not too many people in this world who would write a bunch of good songs, practice them endlessly and toil for months and months, then record the collection - - - just to toss it all away permanently? NAW! That goes against basic human nature, and I'm pretty sure JF did NOT let all his hard labor go to waste! He must have saved a copy of it - just for prosperity and remembrances.

I would agree with the theory that JF has an original acetate of the HOODOO recording hidden someplace very safe, perhaps back in his gardening shack - or at the bottom of his sock drawer! He's prolly got it hidden someplace so safe, he may have forgotten himself where exactly he stashed it!

In the meanwhile, he's got himself a bonified, bootleg legend; and the vines of that Hoodoo legend keep growing longer and prettier!

The "hoodoo" mystery will never go away until john fogerty makes a definitive statement on the songs he wrote that became the "hoodoo" album..............but there again perhaps john likes the idea of us fans talking about these unreleased songs , i remember reading somewhere that john went into the studio in 1979 to re do the songs from this studio set , but it was rejected again. ......Now is the the album that is circulating out there from 1976 or 1979? if been told they are from 1976 but who knows .....ooooh the mystery continues??????

    To DaRiver Boat Queen
The water you speak of, perhaps it's Creedence Clearwater, I know that was corny but I had to say it because it was right there. I really don't think there is a mystery that surrounds the Hoodoo album. Other than what people make of it them selves. I think people want to believe there's more because that's what Hoodoo means; to chase something that isn't there. I believe John poured his heart and soul into making the album and really wanted it to work but in the end it just didn't and he knew it. Lets all face it, John is an absolute perfectionist. He practices for 7 to 8 hours for a 2 hour concert. He knows when it's right and when it just doesn't work. That's why his albums are so good and also sound very much like his live shows, little practice in the studio then he hits the record button, and he's got what he wants. Normally he likes to do it with one take, is what I understand. Be well all, Mike

Yep, i agree to what is above said. And i dont think that hoodoo was re-recorded again in 79.

    hi mr ccr fan
The information i read is that john fogerty re-entered the studio sometime in 1979 to re do some of the songs to get them to a point where the album would be released .....but its my understanding the record company rejected the album again, which would tie in with the comment john made that he told asylym records to destroy all masters of the so called "hoodoo" album.

Personally, I see the 'mystery of Hoodoo' being way over blown. Simple fact is that JF was in a bad place when he wrote the music and he and the record company agreed it was not up to snuff, so it was not released. It could be that the music of that time brings back memories for JF he would rather not return to. Let sleeping dogs lie.
